Zsolt Asztalos’s exhibition titled Memory Models focuses on personal remembrance. By building on the results of cognitive psychological research, it analyzes the questions of past, recollection, personal history and the constructed narratives of memory. From the second half of the 20th century, researches and inquires on personal and collective memory have started playing an increasingly significant role in museological discourses. If we follow Pierre Nora’s terminology and consider the museum as a site of memory (lieu de mémoire) that ensures continuity between past and present in an institutional framework, then, in the operation of the museum, it has equal importance to reflect on the artistic, social and political affairs of the past as to do the same with the present.In recent years, the Kiscell Museum – Municipal Gallery’s exhibition program has been partly characterized by enabling critical discourse between the past and the present. In this respect, this current exhibition is connected to both the previous shows, as the museological representation of recollection and past is forming in close connection with contemporary art. However, the concept of Memory Models investigates this subject from a different perspective: it uses the latest findings of memory research as reference points.The fundamentally numerical results of cognitive psychology that data visualization processes turn into images (MRI), or that scientific resumes form into texts, at the end of another interpretational procedure, the artistic creation, become expressive and illustrative objects and pictures. Besides the visualization of results of scientific research methods, translated by the means of fine art, the artworks presented in the exhibition also carry art historical references. These visual models were born out of the affair of scientific and artistic interpretation, that simultaneously expose the constructed manner of private recollection, and – by embedding them into a museum’s site of memory – they also refer to the questions of collective memory.

These architectural models represent buildings that underwent collective historical traumas. Each of these buildings, thus, carries a dark past. The models of the artist are black, simplified and geomet- rically clean: abstract, subjective paraphrases of the actual building. During the process of abstraction, a kind of memory is created, which here also gains a separate identity. Aesthetically, while standing in the canon of abstract sculptures when looking at the surface, these un- derlying narratives turn the models into a multi-layered, conceptual complex.

The canon is a system that is based on a professional and social consensus, which works of art may enter or may be left out of. The selection criteria are essentially determined by unified professional standards, and sometimes by certain subjective considerations, political motives, and social expectations. Additionally, the canon keeps changing through time. Certain elements are left out, while current research findings and the Zeitgeist may promote the inclusion of others.
The installation includes the reproductions of a personal selection of classical masterpieces from the world’s great museums. Everyday objects form a distinctive context for the reproductions, and new works come into being—a certain subjective, arbitrary rewriting of the Canon.

The memorial made for the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, located at the last battle of the war, in the Italian city of Vittorio Venetto. We know many events and much data from the annals of written history. The memorial puts in center the memories missing from history at large. Many experiences and individual fates have been forgotten, not entering the canon of remembrance for this or that reason.

The performers of the film wordlessly play before their eyes the story of their lives from birth to the current day. They stay silent before the camera, only internally reliving the events. While the viewer does not sense anything, in the mind of the person remembering a movie-like rich and eventful life story is reborn. This duality, the passivity in front of the camera and the activity unfolding within the person creates a unique tension.

A film szereplői némán, szó nélkül játszák le magukban életük történetét a születésüktől a jelen korig. A kamera előtt némák maradnak, csak belül élik át az eseményeket. Míg a néző semmit nem érzékel, addig az emlékező személyben filmszerűen újraéledő gazdag és eseménydús élettörténet születik újjá. Ez a kettősség, vagyis a kamera előtti passzivitás és az emberben lejátszódó aktivitás különös feszültséget eredményez.

Memory – Art Collection is a work that examines the connections between works of art that became part of a collection (that of the Studio of Young Artists’ Association) and their creators. A work of art is the direct impression of the artist’s ideas and personality. When it becomes part of a collection, a work is physically separated from its creator, in whom it lives on like a piece of visual memory. It is this image remembered that I evoke in each of the series’ interviews with artists. As time goes on, a work may become deformed or transformed in its creator’s imagination; it may change dynamically, and even a new work may arise. The notion is influenced by changes in the knowledge of the individual and society. Creators continue to live their lives, but the works in the collections will always remain the impressions of given moments—static images. In the interviews, the artists describe their works, and these descriptions give rise to intangible concepts in the viewer’s/listener’s mind. What appear before us are these immaterial works, in contrast to the physical, static pieces in the collections.

A Memory – Art Collection című mű egy művészeti gyűjteménybe (FKSE) került művek és alkotóinak kapcsolatát vizsgálja. Egy műalkotás a művész gondolatainak, személyiségének közvetlen lenyomata. A gyűjteménybe került mű fizikailag elszakad alkotójától, mely egyfajta emlékképként él tovább az alkotóban. Ezt az emlékképet hívom elő a művészekkel készült interjúsorozatban. Egy mű az idő távlatában az alkotó képzeletében deformálódhat, átalakulhat, vagyis dinamikus változhat, talán egy új mű is létrejöhet. A képzetet befolyásolja az egyéni és a társadalmi tudásváltozás. Az alkotó éli tovább életét, de egy gyűjteményben szereplő alkotás mindig egy adott pillanat lenyomta - statikus kép. Az interjúban a művészek szavakkal írják le alkotásaikat, mely alkotások megfoghatatlanul a néző/hallgató fejében jön létre. Ezek az matéria nélküli művek jelennek meg előttünk szemben a gyűjteményben szereplő fizikai statikus képekkel.

Documentation regarding the restoration work on an antique desk. The desk is taken to pieces during the restoration, then reassembled with up to date tools, the missing pieces are replaced with modern materials, and it is repainted to what is presumably its original color. The works are allegory referring to the act of editing history. We analyze our knowledge and ideas separately and assemble them into a whole. The assembly process depends on the approach of the era, in which it is assembled, the historian themselves as a person, public tastes and even various political influences. The finished work attempts to portray the original state, but its connections, replaced or spliced in elements and even presumed color in many ways is about us and our time period.

A munkálat allegórikusan utal a történelem-szerkesztési műveletre. Vagyis különféle ismereteinket részleteiben analizáljuk, majd összerakjuk kerek egésszé. Az összerakás művelete függ a korszak szemléletétől, melyben összerakódik, függ a történetíró személyétől, a közízléstől és akár különféle politikai befolyásoltságoktól. Restoration of a damaged second hand book with assistance of a restorer. The gluing back together of the torn sections, the replacement of the missing sections with current materials recalls the long-ago state of the book. This state can never return to the original, only create an illusion of it. However in the careful, meticulous work one can find affection which shows how important coming to know the past is, and how attached we are to it. The restoration process alludes allegorically to the editing of history.

Egy antikváriumban vásárolt sérült könyvet újíttattam fel restaurátor segítségével. Az elszakadt részek megragasztása, a hiányzó részek mai anyagokkal való kiegészítése az egykori állapotot idézi meg. Ez az állapot sohasem lesz az eredeti, csak az illúzióját kelti. Ugyanakkor a gondos, aprólékos munkában benne van az a törődés, mely kifejezi, mennyire fontos számunkra a múlt megismerése, és ahhoz való ragaszkodás. A felújítási folyamat allegórikusan utal a történelemszerkesztési elveinkre is.

Documentation regarding the restoration work on a worn, greying mourning flag from the 1950s: removal of textiles, repainting, drying, ironing and reattaching to the flagpole. The process is a symbolic gesture, a sort of humility before the process of remembrance, of making peace with transience.

Side-by-side comparisons of the original and restored versions of incomplete and damaged old photographs. During restoration the missing details were replaced by duplication and placement of other remaining details, that is, the missing detail - based on certain assumptions – is supplemented with elements from elsewhere in the same photograph. This is the essential nature of the retouching process. The restored, retouched picture is in essence the supposition of what the original image must have looked like, in other words an illusionary representation of the original.

Hiányos és sérült régi fényképek eredeti és felújított változata egymás mellett. A felújítás során a hiányzó részleteket a kép más részleteinek odamásolásával hozom létre. Vagyis a hiányzó elemet-  bizonyos feltételezés alapján - a kép más részletével egészítem ki. Ez a retusálási folyamat lényege. A felújított, kiretusált kép lényegében az eredeti kép feltételezése, vagyis illúziója.

On this film we can see the physical education class of a class of school children. The physical exercises are done on the remains of an antique roman building that still stand. It is peculiar how the profane world and the memories of the past meet in a modern environment, and thus the two times and cultures merge into a bizarre whole.

The repainting of worn-out motifs on an antique plate on film. The repainting of the former patterns, and the supplementing of the permanently faded away sections based on supposition attempt to mimic the original state of the plate. Many of the details no longer perfectly correspond to the original, and are based merely on guesswork, and so we can no longer see the object the same as it was before. The restored plate is in some way a new version of the original. This is how we write our own history as well.

Shoe of an unknown male from the 1950s. The repairs performed on the shoe seen on the film in some way allude to our relationship to our past. We supplement the old, worn-out parts with new, modern elements, to create the illusion of the original state.

Images of an office cupboard prior and following it falling apart. In the final disintegration of the cupboard we see the finality of the object based material world that represents our memories.

This wantonly cut in half series of lexicons and the matching bookcase is an integral part of Hungarian culture. Our canonized culture has been edited and created according to the spirit of the age by bigger or smaller groups. The my story – my version project alludes to the fact that anyone may create their own canon from whole cloth, or make their own version using the existing canon as a source. In this case this is the artist’s canon.

A my story – my version projekt arra utal, hogy bárki elkészetheti önkényesen saját kánonját, vagy akár meglévő kánonból merítve a saját verzióját. Jelen esetben ez a művész kánonja.

These wantonly bisected books are an integral part of European culture. Our canonized universal culture has been edited and created according to the spirit of the age by bigger or smaller groups. The my story – my version project alludes to the fact that anyone may create their own canon from whole cloth, or make their own version using the existing canon as a source. In this case this is the artist’s canon.

History is written in accordance with a number of consensual criteria. Especially our image of world history is a large static picture that has been shaped by different interests and views. It has been modelled by political and economic interest groups of various sizes, and to some extent by the individual convictions of authors. This uniform point of view is highlighted by this series, which shows history books from the same viewpoint.

A művészettörténeti kánon számos szempont alapján íródik. A kánonba való bekerülés és olykor kikerülés egyfajta szakmai közmegegyezésen alapul. A világ művészettörténetének létezik egy egységes, kialakult arculata, mely nehezen és lassan változik. Ezt a statikus, egységes nézőpontot mutatja be az ugyanazon perspektivikus szögből készült művészettörténet könyvek sorozata.

A történetírás számos közmegegyezésen alapuló szempont szerint jön létre. Különösen a világtörténelemről alkotott képünk egy nagy statikus kép, mely különféle érdek és szemlélet hozott létre. Számos politikai, gazdasági, kisebb és nagyobb érdekcsoportok, és olykor egyes írók egyéni szemléletei határozzák meg.  Ezt az egységesen kialakult nézőpontot mutatja be az ugyanazon perspektivikus szögből készült valódi történelemkönyvek alapján készült sorozata.

The art canon is written from multiple perspectives. Something entering the canon and the occasional exiting of it is based on a sort of professional consensus. There is a unified, developed image of global art history which changes slowly and only with great difficulty. This static, unified point of view is presented by the series of art history text books shot from the same perspective angle.

Still life photography of museum pieces and archaeological finds. The museum’s organization groups based on period, ethnic group, geographical and cultural units. At the same time, material culture is the remains of individual people as well.

In 1696 in the pilgrim’s temple of the little village of Máriapócs an image of the Virgin Mary started to weep. Soon after it was taken to the Stephhanskirche Dome in Vienna. A copy has been made of the original, which was returned to the temple in Máriapócs. The original in Vienna has not wept since, but the miracle has been recorded as coming to pass twice on the copy. The film deals with the relationship between originality and copies.

A másolat
2015

1696-ban Máriapócs falu kis kegytemplomban könnyezésnek indult egy Szűzanya-kép. Ezt követően hamarosan a bécsi Stephhanskirche Dómba került. Készült egy másolat az eredeti képről, melyet visszaállítottak a máriapócsi templomba. Az eredeti kép Bécsben azóta sem könnyezett, de a másolaton már kétszer is megtörtént ugyanaz a csoda. A film az eredetiség és másolat közötti viszonnyal foglalkozik.

Sometimes there is a professional marketing strategy behind an artist to create a brand hallmarked with the name of the artist. Creators who have fallen into the unknown, without any reputation, embody a kind of humility - even if it wasn’t the result of a purposeful decision. Moreover, the project refers indirectly to the canonizing mechanism of art history; who are those who are missing out, and who will get into the canon of art history? What kind of mechanisms indicate to subsist, or cover up certain names?

bewildered – terrified – threatened
Each bomb has its own story, which is essentially one of two kinds. Bombs may explode and thus fulfill their role as objects made specifically for the purpose of destruction, and then enter history books and the personal histories that families maintain. Zsolt Asztalos in his turn looks into the other possible story in an installation he has prepared for the 55th International Art Exhibition in Venice: the story of the malfunctioning device (unexploded bomb) as it leaves behind its original function, assumes a life of its own, starts writing a narrative, becoming a director of our lives through the contingency it introduces. It stays with us humans as it generates and symbolizes conflicts among us.

It is an object of mercy, a threat, or a memorial. In Asztalos’s video installation, unexploded bombs are revealed to have several functions and fields of interpretation. Floating in an indeterminable space, the bombs seem to exist, thanks to the sound effects that surround them, in a matrix defined by the continuous interaction of the past and the recent past, the present and the future. Zsolt Asztalos’s objets trouvés are multiple representations of conflict situations, open to simultaneous interpretations on personal, local, regional and global levels. This brave and thought-provoking installation belongs to the praxis of visual art that has been instrumental, through research and exhibition, in processing the brutal traumas of the late 20th and 21st centuries.

The majority of bombs dropped on Hungary in the first, but more so the second World War did not explode due to technical failures. They currently live or have lived with us for long decades. Bombs like this are unearthed sometimes during constructions and other events. This footage was made at these locations. The slow, quiet clips explore the silent, hidden secrets of these sites.

Az első, de főleg a második világháborúban Magyarország területére ledobott bombák jelentős része valamely technikai ok miatt nem robbant fel. Velük élünk / éltünk együtt hosszú évtizedeken keresztül. Építkezések és egyéb alkalmak során olykor előkerülnek ilyen bombák. Ezen helyszíneken készültek a film felvételei. A lassú folyású, csendes snittek a helyszínek egyfajta belső, néma titkait tárák fel.

The exhibited installation of Zsolt Asztalos is a monument set up to be a memento for people who throughout history had died for their principles. Framed series of photographs, books and personal items bear witness to the heroes on living room “Ikea” shelves, hiding the essence of their gallantry, commitment to principles, devotion and consistency into a conformist still life. Zsolt Asztalos’ exhibition studies the impact of morality and principles, commercialized mentality of our time and ideas of capitalism by evolving the imitation of a personal space (living room) to a public space (gallery). According to our knowledge, humans are the only creatures in wildlife who live by consciously chosen principles and ideas. Every creature instinctively aims to survive. Our biological organisms are defensive down to a cellular level. They are constantly fighting to stay alive. However humans are not only physical but intellectual beings too. We have conscious ideas about the world. These conscious ideas change through time, cultures, countries, religions or even from person to person. Humans are capable of overriding their physical instincts by their principles, sometimes even capable of going against their physical existence with the help of principles. What are those principles and why would humans even be ready to give up their physical existence for an idea? The moral contrast can be perceived between the furnishings and the pictures of the heroes. The installation that imitates a personal monument studies the acts and the dynamics of remembrance, and the conception of ambition and principle.

The aim of maintaining National Parks is to preserve their special ecological integrity for present and future generations. These areas are kept clear of any kind of industrial or agricultural effects, they represent pure and natural segments within our techocratic society. The short film NATURE RESERVATION is a metaphoric nature documentary that was shot in the hungarian Kiskunság National Park. Its slow paste and poetic approach widens the horizon of interpretation and turns the nature documentary into a social, human and psychological allegory. It draws a poetic parallel between an enclosed National Park and a small fragment of the human soul that is untouched by the surrounding society.

A Nemzeti Park célja, hogy egy bizonyos területen egyfajta ökológiai egységet őrizzen meg a jövő és a jelen számára, amely védett mindenfajta ipari és mezőgazdasági hatásoktól. A Park egy tisztán hagyott, természetes rész a technokrata világunkban. A Rezervátum című rövidfilm egy metafórikus természetfilm, mely a magyaroszági Kiskunsági Nemzeti Parkban készült. Lassú, finom, éteri jellegű feldolgozása kitágítja a konkrét természeti környezet értelmezését egyfajta társadalmi, emberi, lelki környezetallegóriává. A film költői párhuzam a hétköznapi világunktól elzárt Nemzeti Park és a társadalom illetve az egyén lelkének körbehatárolt, érintetlen, apró kis része között.
